‘Chalkboard mural’

Challenge

La Trobe University ranks in the top 1.1% of the world’s universities. Fizz Farm works regularly with La Trobe — but this project was definitely one of our favourites.

With an open day fast approaching, and their 50th anniversary celebrations still fresh, the uni was installing a brand new state-of-the-art radio studio within the central student hub. While under construction, the site was surrounded by unsightly black hoardings. They needed a fun, fresh way to brighten up the area.

Solution

This project showcases Fizz Farm’s ability to really think outside the box when it comes to compelling visual content. We bought in key crew members Dylan Mercer, one of our resident animators, and Cesar Salmeron, our gun cinematographer, and let them loose.

Armed with a list from the university of 20 key communications activities they have achieved over the decades, we created a paper mock up of a stylised chalk mural that would simultaneously celebrate the uni and bring colour into the outdoor space.

Over two fun-filled (and back-breaking) days, Dylan covered the expanse of black hoarding with hand-drawn text and caricatures, creating an eye-catching and informative display for students and visitors. Meanwhile, Cesar captured the entire process in glorious time lapse, which we then edited together into a neat video package that the uni could use as extended promotional content.

Result

La Trobe loved it. It achieved their goal of brightening up the construction space, and it made use of the opportunity to display some of the uni’s awesome achievements in communications over the years.

It was a spectacle for all who walked by, as the mural unfolded in real time, creating a live-event feel to the project. And when the creation of the artwork was over, the time lapse video preserved the action, providing bonus promotional collateral to the client.
